“Nice hat.” It's the third time I've heard it —en route from Detroit to Alberta, via Minneapolis— and I’m not sure which hat my interlocutors have their eye on. My battered Stetson? Surely not. Must be the coffee-coloured one I’m carrying in hand, a gift from my girlfriend Heidi to my mother.
Bravo! On all counts. Twine it all together with the fact that the herons (well, their cousins, the egrets) were some of the favorite victims of nineteenth-century milliners. Their beauty was often fatal!
Absolutely delightful, Ken. The photos were just excellent. Herons of all varieties are remarkable birds! Great blue herons fly over my house every day just before sunset to nest in the tall eucalyptus. Such a magnificent noise they make REEECH REECH REECH! as they pass over looking more like pterodactyls than birds. Their small white cousins, the snowy egrets, with their silly topknots sit like lone sentries in the lagoon.
Hats and herons 💕 Watched a heron alight in a pond behind some barbed wire only two days ago. The universe trying to communicate with us via its winged messengers - and the message is hope.

Can we call you Heronymous Bosch?
